Replacement Dwelling in Dungeness
East View is a sensitively designed replacement dwelling set within the extraordinary shingled landscape of Dungeness. Inspired by the area’s historic cottages, outbuildings, and railway heritage, the project reinterprets the original 1920s bungalow with a simple, low-lying composition that blends seamlessly into its surroundings.
The design uses natural timber, charred cladding, zinc roofing and puce-coloured detailing—materials rooted in the local vernacular. A glazed link and planted shingle roof connect the main house with a smaller rear volume, echoing the characteristic cluster of buildings seen across the ‘Ness’.
Significant reductions in hardstanding and the reintroduction of native shingle enhance biodiversity and restore the site’s natural character. Internally, the home offers a modern, light-filled layout with views across the iconic landscape.
East View is a modest, sustainable, and contemporary evolution of a Dungeness classic—built to endure the coastal environment while honouring the unique spirit of the place.
