No. 6-8 High Street is a two-storey Grade II listed building located in the centre of Lydd (Conservation Area), and was built in circa 1715. Historically, the property was a Butcher’s shop which opened around 1910. Prior to that, the property was originally built as a house and
office and had outbuildings in the rear garden, which were demolished in the late 20th Century. In the 1980’s, a single storey extension was built to the rear, which contained a kitchen and ground floor bathroom.
Working alongside Bloomfields Chartered Town Planners and Fuller Long (Heritage Consultants), Planning and Listed Building consent was granted in 2024 for the conversion of the former Butcher’s shop and flats, into a single family dwelling, with off-street parking and an much improved garden. Internally, careful attention was paid to the existing fabric (original exposed beams, posts, lath and plaster) to ensure that any historic details of importance were protected and retained.
Sensitive changes included the introduction of secondary glazing, minor internal adaptions, the replacement of the side and rear windows and doors with conservation sashes, new oak joinery and the introduction of Crittall style black framed windows and French doors in the 1980’s modern extension, along with a new kitchen and utility room.
